Abanaki Delivers Solutions to Oil Recycling

The approximate amount of used motor oil released into the environment each year is the equivalent of three Exxon Valdez oil spills. So Jim Nickerson, president of Nicko Recycling, a Texas recycler of used oil filters, knew it was time to get involved. And he knew he could rely on the technology provided by Abanaki Corporation's Oil Skimmer Division. With the help of an Abanaki skimmer, Jim developed his own proprietary process for safely salvaging the tens of thousands of used oil filters improperly discarded in this country annually.

The process involves three distinct steps- crushing, heating and skimming. Abanaki has become vital to the skimming step. "At first," says Nickerson, "we used a suction hose to skim the oil off the surface. We quickly realized this method was time

consuming, messy and inefficient. Either too much oil remained in the water or wesucked up too much water with the oil when the oil film thinned."

In place for more than two years, the Abanaki Model MB Oil Grabber® employs two, eight inch wide belts and stationary wiper blades to skim the water surface and remove up to 200 gallons of oil per hour. The unit is critical to Nicko's recycling process and , according to Nickerson, attracts a lot of attention from the regulators and legislators from Texas and other states who regularly visit Nickerson's plant to learn more about the benefits of oil filter recycling.

"The unit is virtually maintenance-free and it operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week," says Nickerson, who plans to purchase two more Abanaki skimmers

when he completes a million dollar expansion of his business which will double his capacity to 100,000 filters a day. In addition to oil recycling, the steel, rubber and paper components of the filters are also recycled through Nicko Recycling's process.

Oil Skimmer Facts
Typical Applications for Industrial Skimmers

Wastewater Sumps - Try Abanaki's Oil Grabber® Model 4 or Oil Grabber® Model 8: Reclaim waste oil before further processing, discharge or disposal. Correctly designed skimmers remove oil with little water content, reducing the cost of disposal. Typical users are automotive shops and manufacturing plants.

Coolants and Cutting Fluids - Try Abanaki's Mighty Mini®, Tote-It®, Oil Grabber® Model 4 or Oil Grabber® Model 8: Tramp oils in coolants for metal cutting and stamping reduce the life and effectiveness of the fluid. They also reduce the quality of manufactured parts. Skimmers that remove tramp oils typically pay for thenselves.

Heat Treating Fluids - Try Abanaki's Tote-It, Oil Grabber Model 4 or Oil Grabber Model 8: Quench oils that must be removed from heat treated

parts can be captured for reuse or disposal. The results are lower quench oil costs, prolonged wash water life and lower disposal costs.

Parts Washers - Try Abanaki's Mighty Mini®, Tote-It®, Oil Grabber® Model 4 or Oil Grabber® Model 8: Tramp oils recontaminate parts as they are removed from a wash tank. Abanaki skimmers solve this problem, and with appropriate chemistry, can extend wash water life by several weeks or months.

Food Processing Facilities - Try Abanaki's Tote-It®, Oil Grabber® Model 4, Oil Grabber® Model 8 and the all stainless Oil Boss™ Models: Removal of vegetable oils, greases and animal fats from a plant's wastewater stream reduces the cost of processing and disposal and often improves resale value.

Parking Lots, Garages and Service Facilities - Try Abanaki's Tote-It®, Oil Grabber® Model 4 or Oil Grabber® Model 8: Waste oil from leaks, spills and other sources must be retrieved from sumps before water can be reused or discharged to storm or sanitary sewers.
