Oil Skimmer Extends Coolant Life
and Clears Smoky
Environment for Busy Machine Shop |
Six months ago, Tom
Zovko, owner of Z & Z Manufacturing, a Cleveland Ohio-based producer of hydraulic
fittings and special screw machine products, couldn't see across his 15,000 square-ft
machine shop. The smoke generating from his CNC machines was not only polluting the
environment but consuming much of his profits. That's when Zovko contacted Abanaki
Corporation, Oil Skimmer Division of Chagrin Falls, Ohio for a solution.
Founded in 1980, Z & Z manufacturers hydraulic pipe, tube, weld, hose and
British/metric fittings in steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, Monel, plastic and
various castings. Their machines use a way-lube oil to prevent rusting and ensure smooth
operation and a coolant for easy cutting at high speeds. The problem: with the oil and
coolant concentrated in the same area, the end result was a smoke-filled atmosphere which
was unsafe for workers and against EPA regulations.
Zovko tried changing the coolant on a daily basis in an attempt to

coolant. This didn't
work. Plus, it cost Z & Z Manufacturing thousands of dollars in coolant, downtime and
labor charges.
Already successfully operating the Abanaki Mighty Mini®
belt oil skimmer in his machine shop, Zovko decided it was time to add another.
The trial use of the Abanaki unit proved that oil skimming could
extend the life of Z & Z Manufacturing's coolant for several weeks and rid the shop of
heavy smoke. "Abanaki brought in a demo unit, made suggestions on the most efficient
way to use the product, and said if we weren't completely satisfied we wouldn't have to
pay. One week later I told them to send me the invoice," said Zovko.
The Mighty Mini weighs only 7 pounds, allowing it to be carried to
different locations as needed. The unit, which has a footprint measuring less than 5
inches by 7 inches, is small enough to be quickly installed through a 2" diameter
bunghole in a drum using an optional mounting bracket.
According to Zovko, "It's hard to say exactly how much oil the
Mighty Mini is recovering. If there's a little oil it's going to take out a little, if
there's a lot of oil, it's going to take out a lot. If the Mighty Mini only |

removes 20 gallons of oil per year, it's paid for itself."
Zovko adds, "Since installing the Abanaki unit, we've increased
the life of our coolant and the life of our tools, saved on maintenance and EPA costs, and
have been able to breath a whole lot easier."
As their machine shop grows, Z & Z Manufacturing plans to add
more Abanaki belt oil skimmers to their line-up. You can be sure Abanaki Corporation; Oil

ABANAKI UNVEILS IMPROVED PETROXTRACTOR®
FOR ENVIRONMENTAL INDUSTRY |
The Abanaki PetroXtractor has been radically improved in response
to suggestions from environmental clients. New system packages, including underground
installation or explosion proof, a high capacity tail pulley and increased volume troughs,
have been added to this popular line of belt skimmers.
The PetroXtractor is now available in 1", 2" and 4"
belt sizes allowing their use in monitoring wells with casings as small as 2" inside
diameter. The PetroXtractor removes oil, fuel and other floating hydrocarbons from
groundwater monitoring wells, recovery wells, underground tanks and other areas where
access is limited and there is a deep drop between the well opening and the surface of the
water.
The belt comes in custom lengths and can reach depths of 100 ft. to
ensure efficient hydrocarbon removal even with fluctuating water levels. A specially
engineered |

"Polybelt"
with oleophilic design provides greater skimming ability with less water pickup than
suction or torpedo pumps. The addition of the 4" wide belt doubles the previous
recovery rate for this line of skimmers.
Built to withstand the most rugged conditions, the PetroXtractor
handled liquids with temperatures up to 180° F and pH levels ranging from 1 to 13. This
lightweight unit weighs less than 40 lbs. (without belt or tail pulley) and provides
virtually maintenance-free operation.
For harsh environments, a reinforced shelter is available to protect
the PetroXtractor. Optional explosion proof motors can be added in areas where hazardous
environments may be present or where required by law.
